How to Calculate How Much Fabric You Need

When planning a sewing project and choosing what part of your wardrobe to make, the first step is selecting the right fabric. Once you’ve chosen your desired textile, the next question arises: how much fabric do I actually need?

This has always been a tricky question for many sewists and tailors — but we’re here to help! Below you’ll find a helpful reference table showing approximate fabric amounts for various garments.

Fabric Requirement Table

Remember! When cutting and sewing, always add around 10% extra fabric to account for possible mistakes, seams, or hems.

The same applies to patterned fabrics (checks, stripes, or prints that must be matched). In such cases, the required fabric amount can increase significantly.

The table below is indicative only. The actual fabric amount depends on the pattern, style, and cut of the garment.
