What materials are best for sewing a shirt from?

Bearing in mind the fact that we wear a shirt close to our body, and that it is often the first layer of our clothing, we should choose a fabric with a predominance of natural fibers. We most often sew shirts with cotton fabrics, using the ideal properties of cotton: it can be woven in various ways, has excellent thermal properties, is easy to care for, forms strong weaves, and is fairly resistant to abrasion. That is why cotton has been reigning in the shirt world for years.

Types of shirts and suitable fabric selection for them

It is generally accepted that we have shirts for formal occasions, business shirts, informal casual shirts, and work shirts. To match them with the appropriate polo shirt You should pay attention to the fabric weave. It is one of the main parameters that determine the shirt.

Herringbone i.e., fishbone or heringbone

Herringbone is a twill weave that, after weaving, creates a mirrored V-shaped pattern. The name of the fabric comes from its resemblance to herringbone/fin bones. Similar patterns on tiles and bricks made this centuries-old style a classic. This weave has all the advantages of a twill weave, which means herringbone fabrics drape well and are easy to iron. Herringbone is smooth to the touch, has a textured warm surface, and a slight sheen. The additional pattern makes it an excellent versatile fabric that works for both dresses and casual shirts. Poplin

Poplin, also known as sheeting fabric, is probably what one would call a “standard” shirting fabric and is characterized by a classic stiffness. Poplin is woven with a plain over-under weave. Such a weave produces a solid fabric that is soft, yet also cool and breathable. Poplin is also a strong, very smooth and durable fabric that feels like silk to the touch. Poplin shirts are typically the smoothest among all fabrics due to the lack of texture, but they may also be the most prone to wrinkling. We recommend poplin shirts for: formal occasions, everyday business styling, and for celebrations.

Dobby

Dobby is a fabric produced on a dobby loom, characterized by fine geometric patterns and an additional texture. Warp and weft yarns may be the same color or different. Satin yarns are particularly effective in this type of weave, because their glossy texture enhances the pattern. Dobby weaves have a small, geometric, textured appearance, formed by repeating weaving patterns, such as bird’s-eye quilting. They are typically lightweight and open, giving the material a lace-like look. Luxury and smooth to the touch, dobby-weave fabric is best suited for formal or business shirts.

Oxford

Oxford is a basket weave in which many weft threads intersect with the same number of warp threads. Often, one weft color intersects with a white warp thread, creating a two-color effect. The two-by-two weave creates a slightly rougher texture, but it is more durable than most fabrics. This texture makes the fabric thicker and warmer, ideal for wearing on cold days. The Oxford weave is popular in casual shirts, especially with a button-down collar; however, Oxford shirts can certainly be worn to the office if their cut and finishing are sufficiently professional. Generally speaking, a tailored Oxford shirt is a wardrobe essential due to its durability and versatility. We recommend Oxford shirts for: family gatherings, informal days in the office.

Chambray

Chambray to poplin or cotton fabric used for workwear. It is a plain-weave fabric made from a thicker yarn, which gives it a more relaxed character and makes it suitable for workwear. Chambray fabric is woven with colored yarn in the warp and white yarn in the weft. It is an excellent alternative to shirting-weight denim, which has the same color range. Because a chambray shirt has a basic weave, it can be woven more finely than denim, which has a more complex twill weave. We recommend a chambray shirt for: summer/autumn workwear.

Houndstooth otherwise Houndstooth

Houndstooth is a pattern created on fabric through a color effect and weave. Traditionally, the warp arrangement is designed so that four dark threads interlace with four white threads. Similarly, the weft is woven from four dark threads followed by four light threads. In this structure, the weft passes over two threads and then under two threads. (This is the same structure as for denim.) The fabric formed by combining this structure with a color arrangement has a two-color pattern in the form of broken squares, called “houndstooth” because of its resemblance to frayed teeth. The houndstooth weave is rich and elegant, which makes it ideal for men’s formal shirts, blazers, or even overcoats.

Twill weave, i.e., Twill

Twill weave is a type of textile weave that creates diagonal, parallel ribs. This diagonal structure produces a durable and attractive fabric with countless applications. Most of our heavy-duty workwear is made using a twill weave. Denim and khaki trousers are made using a twill weave. Unlike other plain weaves, twill weaves have a right side (called the technical right side) and a left side (called the technical left side). Another advantage of a twill weave is that the diagonal pattern shows dirt and stains less clearly than a plain weave. A twill weave has better properties than other weaves in terms of water resistance, durability, and resistance to creasing. Diagonal fabric is softer and thicker than poplin, and it is also crease-resistant and easy to iron. It drapes very well, which makes it ideal for shirts. The drawback of shirts made from diagonal fabric is that they do not look as elegant and are not as smooth to the touch as poplin shirts. We recommend diagonal-fabric shirts as excellent everyday shirts, both for work and for travel.

What fabrics for a women’s shirt?

The most popular fabric for a women’s shirt is poplin, which is ideal both in the plain solid-color version and in the version with patterns.
A very good fabric for such shirt blouses is also viscose, for example viscose with a sheen, , matte viscose, , viscose twill.
An elegant shirt can also be made from silk satin or from exclusive satin viscose.
Often, ladies choose raw silk for unwashed-style shirts, or linen. Denim is also very popular.

When it comes to classic shirts, elegance is always in fashion here. A well-cut shirt, just like a well-tailored suit, is the pinnacle of style and smartness.
